2022 ND Cyber Madness Tournament Information

The State of North Dakota Chief Information Officer Shawn Riley announced the North Dakota Cyber Madness tournament is coming to Bismarck and will be held at Bismarck State College on Feb. 10 – 12, 2022.

This is NOT just for gamers, techies, and hackers. It is for everyone, and we will help you prepare!

  • Physical, Logical, and Virtual Addressing
  • Packet Encapsulation and Lifecycle
  • Network and Endpoint Security Technologies
  • Networking and Security Principles

To prepare for the competition, teams will gain access to the PA Moodle Network Security Fundamentals portal.

  • Day 1: Feb 10, 2022  1:00 – 4:30 PM

    • Students will have the opportunity to visit with multiple colleges, workforce partners and vendors.
    • Palo Alto Cyber Range Team assist the students on further training to prepare for the event.

Competition

Schools may send multiple teams of up to five (5) students each. Once a school assigns a student to a team, they may not move to another.

The competition consists of three rounds, over two days, during which teams will access the Palo Alto Cyber Range and attempt to solve as many challenges as possible. As teams work through the challenges, they are awarded flags and their scores will update in real time.

Rounds 1 and 2 are Capture the Flag format divided among the following five categories. Questions increase in difficulty from round 1 to round 2.

  • Network and Endpoint Security Technologies
  • Networking and Security Principles

Round 3 [Championship Round] will occur in a Live Fire Cyber Range

How to Prepare

  • Prior to the tournament
    • Teams will have access to the Palo Alto Networks NetSec Fundamentals online training resources
    • We will host a “town hall” meeting for school technology leaders where we will discuss the tournament. A recording will be posted on this page.
  • At the event,
    • We will host an education and practice session on day one where students will receive guided instruction and practice on NetSec Fundamentals and the use of the cyber range (the tournament field of play) from industry professionals.

Schools can unload in the front (north side) of the loop.  There is parking on the North and South sides of the building. Parking permits are not required.

Prior to the competition on the first day, students will get to hear two keynote speakers:

  • Shawn Riley, North Dakota Chief Information Officer

Also on day one, students will have the opportunity to visit multiple colleges and vendors. Rounding out day one, the Palo Alto Cyber Range Team will be on-site, working with the students on further training to prepare for the event.  The second day will be the first of two rounds of competition and day three will wrap up the finals.
