2022 ND Cyber Madness Tournament Information
The State of North Dakota Chief Information Officer Shawn Riley announced the North Dakota Cyber Madness tournament was coming to Bismarck and was held at Bismarck State College on Feb. 10 – 12, 2022.
This is NOT just for gamers, techies, and hackers. It is for everyone, and we will help you prepare!

To prepare for the competition, teams gained access to the PA Moodle Network Security Fundamentals portal.

- Students had the opportunity to visit with multiple colleges, workforce partners and vendors.

Competition
Schools could send multiple teams of up to five (5) students each. Once a school assigned a student to a team, they could not move to another.
The competition consisted of three rounds, over two days, during which teams accessed the Palo Alto Cyber Range and attempted to solve as many challenges as possible. As teams worked through the challenges, they were awarded flags and their scores updated in real time.
Rounds 1 and 2 were Capture the Flag format divided among the following five categories. Questions increased in difficulty from round 1 to round 2.

- Networking and Security Principles
Round 3 [Championship Round] occured in a Live Fire Cyber Range
How to Prepare
- Prior to the tournament
- Teams had access to the Palo Alto Networks NetSec Fundamentals online training resources
- We hosted a “town hall” meeting for school technology leaders where we discussed the tournament.
- At the event,
- We hosted an education and practice session on day one where students received guided instruction and practice on NetSec Fundamentals and the use of the cyber range (the tournament field of play) from industry professionals.

Also on day one, students had the opportunity to visit multiple colleges and vendors. Rounding out day one, the Palo Alto Cyber Range Team was on-site, working with the students on further training to prepare for the event. The second day was the first of two rounds of competition and day three wrapped up the finals.
