NDIT-EduTech and Gateway to Science are excited to bring the Esri ArcGIS Online School Competition 2023 to schools in ND! The competition is open to any students in grades 4-12 (competing as individuals or a team of two), with middle school (gr. 4-8) and high school (gr. 9-12) divisions. Esri is providing a grant of $100 for each of the top five schools from each division and the top entry in each division will also be submitted to Esri for entry into the national competition. For full details about the competition from Esri, view the contest page.

What is GIS? GIS stands for Geographic Information System, which is just a way to store and manipulate geographical information (maps) on a computer.

Who is Esri? Esri is a leader in the field of GIS. They are the sponsor of the national competition and provide ArcGIS software. You can read more about them here.

I’m interested in providing this opportunity to my students, but I don’t know anything about GIS. Where do I start? If you want to learn more about GIS, here is a getting started guide from Esri.

My school doesn’t have any ArcGIS software. What do I do? Esri offers no cost software for instructional use, go here to learn more about getting the software.

Want to see examples of past winners? Examples from past national winners can be viewed here.

To register for the competition, please fill out this form. Final projects are due to the state leadership team by 3pm central on Friday, May 5. Winners will be announced by 3pm central on Monday, May 15. If you have any questions, please contact help@k12.nd.us.
